There’s not much to think about with this one. Yes, personalized gifts are classy … so long as they’re not the ones you make yourself when your skill is obviously lacking.  I appreciate the time and effort involved, but to be honest, if you give me your artwork and you’re really not very good at it, you’re never going to see it displayed anywhere in my home.

Neither are you going to see me wearing any jewellery or using any bag you bought from a destitute person out of a good heart.  Am I a snob? Yes.  I’m just honest about it while others will pretend to shower appreciation and gratitude on something they don’t know what to do with.

The other day my sister and I were thinking about what to get for Dad’s 70th birthday. You know the big one. The one birthday that we, Chinese, actually deign to celebrate. We go for broke on SPEND and indulgence. So off we go to the nearest Rolex Store.

Although the conventional wisdom says MONEY isn’t love, MONEY is a pretty good measure of it. We all know that we’d eat better at Jean George in Shanghai, Charlie Trotter in Chicago, Nobu (anywhere), than the local fare at the Chinese place near you.

And love is best expressed over candle light and a fine Chianti or Bordeaux from either left or right bank as opposed to the Saturday night Chilean special. I digress. Back to, DAD and the 70th. Why a Rolex? No Baum & Mercier, Cartier, or Tag? Mind you, we are Chinese and no other watches has the cachet and screams “bling” more than our good ole Oyster. Hence we are here at the topic of the day…. should we get the gold/champagne Rolex as our Dad is wont to ask for. He’s retired at the age of 70 and wears polos all the time. OR should we get the understated and more tasteful? Can you help?
