Service in Singapore: A Long Way to Go

Sigh … it’s really hard  to find good help these days.  I know its the Christmas rush and everything but if you’re going to be in the service industry then you better know how to smile.  It amazes me how these Chinese immigrants have assimilated themselves seamlessly into Singapore’s food industry.  They serve with a smile and a recommendation.  They even come back and check to see if everything is ok and if you want anything else.  Are they on commission?  Or do they get better wages based on the restaurant’s monthly takings, I think not.  If they are, good for the restaurateur.

As for the Singaporean service staff, they absolutely cannot be bothered.  They feel the work is beneath them and they show it in their faces- “I’d rather be at home playing with my computer.”  Work is work, play is play.  If you’re going to accept wages, better do what is  expected in return.
