Recently, the New York Times wrote about the declining population in the developed world, how couples in countries like Italy, Germany, and France were not keeping up their side of the bargain by having enough kids to repopulate the population, as it were.
Where is the world coming to? Who will handcraft my not so little Ferragamos if not by little Italians slaving over the cobbler’s “block” or whatever they work from? And will there be more more precision German engineering in my BMW or Mercedes Benz SLK because they’ll all be Asian (and named Miata)?
Shudder…. But seriously… the problem apparently is more worrisome at home. In South Korea, the birth rate is at 1.1 which means that 2 people are typically only producing 1 children. The researchers cite that the reason for this is because the societies are growing more modern with demands of jobs for women in addition to wife/motherhood; however, the culture is not adapting letting women fend on their own. If that’s true, then who are all the people that we’re meeting in Jack and Jane stores, nevermind the Baby-Gap’s.
Well, those are what who the census call the super-rich.You see, it appears, that we are in an hour-glass/M shaped society (however you wish to call it in your select economy).
Bottom line, is that the poor have a lot of babies and so are the rich. So the super-rich, are having 3,4,5,6 babies - look at Brangelina (yes, they adopted 3 others). And my honey’s boss and his wife are not stopping at 4 (no snip snip for him). It’s come what may. Shudder…. Or you can do what my sister has done - it’s the big ‘C’.
Well, I’ll have you know, I think alls well that ends well. After all Gregory Clark’s assertion in “A Brief Economic History of the World” says that Industrial Revolution was the result of the Rich out producing and outsurviving the rest of the humanity, hence the bourgeois inherited the earth. So, ladies… it is your duties to go forth and procreate. Afterall, we need no only the heir but a lot (and I mean a lot) of spares. Have a good time and don’t forget the cosmos.

This is depressing stuff.
The yearn to pass on one’s genes has always been an issue for the history of humankind. But somehow, this urge is lost as civilization advance.
Perhaps people see that their mark can be left through other avenues. i.e. their deeds rather than their genes.
